What actually leaves with a top rep

Accounts and pipeline are visible. Less visible are the rep’s pattern library: how they interpret risk, choose proof, navigate stakeholders, and know when a deal is unlikely to progress.

Those capabilities may not appear in CRM notes because they happen inside conversations and moment-to-moment decisions.

Why exit interviews are too late

An exit interview relies on memory and compresses years of experience into broad advice. It rarely supplies comparable examples or reveals the tacit cues that triggered a decision.

Preservation should be continuous, built around observed work and recurring situations rather than a last-minute documentation request.

A knowledge continuity plan

Identify capabilities with high business dependence and low redundancy. Gather representative conversations, reconstruct decision points, compare examples, and assign reviewers who will remain after the rep leaves.

Store reusable skills with evidence and owners, then test whether another rep can apply them without the original expert present.

What to do in the final 30 days

If departure is already known, prioritize a few consequential situations. Do not attempt to document everything. Run evidence-based debriefs around selected calls and validate the output with another experienced manager or rep.
